Shibi Town (石壁镇) of Ninghua County in Sanming city, Fujian province, is the cradle of the Hakka people and their culture. The Hakka communities in Fujian were established when a large number of Han people migrated to the region from the north to escape war, famine, and river flooding—and at the encouragement of the government, and due to the lure of economic opportunities in the region.
The migration began during the Jin dynasty (晋朝). Many of the Han migrants passed by Ninghua Shibi and settled there permanently.
The Han people who settled in Shibi town combined their original culture and language with local ways of speaking and living, eventually creating the Hakka dialect and culture that still exists today. The Chinese characters for Hakka (客家) translate literally to "guest families.”
After hundreds of years of living and thriving at Shibi town, new generations of Hakka people moved to nearby regions including western Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Hunan, Hongkong, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia.
Today, there are more than 120 million Hakka people around the world, in more than 80 countries and regions.
Due the historical significance of Shibi Town, the Hakka people and historians attach great importance to the region. A lot of Hakka people, scholars, and journalists from all over the world come to Shibi town to either search for their roots or study the culture and language. A family temple for Hakka people was built in 1995, and the local government designated October as "Hakka ancestor worship month.”
Every year in October, a Hakka ancestor worship ceremony is hosted at Shibi Town to commemorate Hakka ancestors.
